Civil Rights Enactment Shines – “Fifty Years Later”

“Fifty Years Later” is an experience worthy of everyone’s time and attention. The first act reviews Civil Rights back to the Bible and forward again through history. We learned about many incidents and laws that have been left out of many history books. The performance even dared to cover the race riots in Omaha Nebraska, discrimination, and murder so very close to home. Enacted by 50 students from theater and music studies with the addition of other dedicated students from Union College, this reviewer was moves to tears more than once. Freedom Songs from the Sixties were brought to life and filled me with emotion that I never knew was missing. I can not praise them enough for this effort.

The second Act is a collection of creative projects by the students. Skits, sole searching songs, and revealing monologues open the audience up to the fact that discrimination is still a part of our lives. Students had real stories from their Hispanic, native American, and African-American experiences and history. Each item was worthy in it own right.

Some humor was mixed in through irony, especially in “The Busses are a Comin’, Oh Yeah.”  Several songs were given new meaning included “We Shall Overcome,” We shall Not be Moved,” and “Oh Freedom.”

As with any large group of young performers, a few lines were dropped and some voices were stronger than others. A surprising vocal was performed by a student not listed in the Choral groups. Anna Auger shared her alto performance with a quality that reminded me of the uplifting vocals in a Disney Movie.

This event deserves to be supported, the Theater filled, and the presentation of Act one should be promoted beyond Union Campus.  -Keith Larsen
