Our thanks to Meals on Wheels

Tabitha, your answer for Elder Care, is pleased to share in celebration and congratulate Southwood Lutheran Church for receiving a Governor’s Points of Light Award for its continued commitment to Tabitha Meals on Wheels. Southwood was awarded the prestigious honor at a recent ceremony at the state capitol.

Southwood congregants have shared their time, talent and treasure with Tabitha for the past 13 years, totaling more than 25,000 volunteer hours. Though they’ve served in a variety of ways, their passion for Tabitha Meals on Wheels has been an essential part of their service success. Southwood represents more than 60 volunteers who assume responsibility for multiple Meals on Wheels routes each week. In all, the group delivers more than 4,000 meals every year.

In addition to their service with meal delivery, Southwood volunteers were instrumental in helping to start Tabitha’s food box program. These congregants provide financial resources and organize volunteers to deliver boxes of supplemental groceries each week to dozens of our community’s Elders in need.

The Governor’s Points of Light Awards are presented quarterly and recognize Nebraska volunteers who give their time, talent and energy to help Nebraskans build stronger communities. Judging criteria include fulfilling community needs and providing solutions, community mobilization, innovation, impact, building partnerships and collaborations, and ongoing involvement.

Tabitha Meals on Wheels has delivered hot, noon meals to individuals in the Lincoln community since 1967. Today it is the only program of its kind helping Elders remain independent in their homes. The need for Meals on Wheels continues to climb each year and currently averages more than 500 meals delivered each day. Recipients receive not only a balanced meal, but also a valuable face-to-face safety check. As 70 percent of recipients are unable to afford the full cost of a meal, volunteers and generous supporters are essential to the program’s success.
