Hello from the Lincoln 55+ Seniors Paper,

OLLI – Osher Life Long Learning – has been just a great success. In the last months of a 3 year grant, OLLI had 304 members with a long term goal of reaching 500 members. Meeting this goal would earn a $1 Million endowment to help educate Seniors in Lincoln NE..On March 1st, 2007, with publication of a 4 page, color ad in the spring issue of the Lincoln 55+ Senior Paper, our membership jumped in just 6 weeks to 447. After the next 4-page ad in the summer issue, we reached 537 – well beyond the “long-term goal.”  After the membership year ended, we dropped back to 440 members but surged forward again after the Fall 2007 ads – to 650 members. So – in 10 months, OLLI membership rose from 304 to 650. Wow. And yes! We did get that 1st $Million endowment.

OLLI board members carried 1200-1500 papers (of 12,000 total) to their friends and neighbors and doctors offices for each issue. Offering the 55+ Paper became a method for starting a conversation about OLLI.  The Lincoln 55+ is proud of the the 12 years relationship with OLLI. in 2018, we are over 1400 members and now have a second endowment in hand. A million here and an million there adds up.

OLLI – Flatwater Shakespeare Company Presents: “The Tempest”

Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”

The Flatwater Shakespeare Company will present William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” one of the first English tragic comedies. You are invited to see the production and then participate in a talk back session with actors and others from the Company.

Come with us to an enchanted island where Prospero, a sorcerer and the rightful Duke of Milan, and his daughter Miranda have been marooned for twelve years. When Prospero discovers that his old enemies are sailing near the island, he creates a storm to wreck the ship. The survivors, including young Ferdinand who catches Miranda’s eye, make it to shore only to fall prey to Prospero’s machinations.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, also known as OLLI at UNL, will host a free open house from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 17 at the downtown Cornhusker Marriott, 333 S. 13th St. The institute’s courses, special events and travel opportunities are designed specifically for people 50 and older.
“At the open house, people will be able to get complete overviews of classes, meet instructors, join OLLI or renew a membership,” said Dee Aguilar, OLLI coordinator. “If you want to connect with peers, make new friends and have new experiences, then come to the OLLI open house to find your adventure.”
OLLI offers more than 150 courses and special events each year. Term 3 classes begin Jan. 25. OLLI and its partners will host informational tables with representatives from OLLI courses at the open house. Representatives will provide details about special events and travel opportunities.
For a $50 mid-year membership fee, members can enjoy all of the courses, events and travel destinations. An immediate credit of $30 is assigned to the member’s account to use for a course or event. Members also receive ticket discounts to performances of Abendmusik, Angels Theatre Company, Arts for the Soul, Lincoln Community Playhouse, Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music, Nebraska Chamber Players, TADA Theatre, as well as a new-member discount with Friends of the Ross Theatre and a 10-percent discount on books at the University Bookstore.
Term 3 will include courses associated with this year’s theme, “The Face of Lincoln: History, Culture and Change,” and special events related to the coming presidential election.
> The “Introduction to Chinese Culture” six-week course will help participants experience the rich cultural heritage of the ancient civilization.
> No institution plays a larger role in the assimilation of refugees and immigrants than public schools. “From Everywhere … They Became Americans” is a course that will provide an overview of how Lincoln and Crete public schools meet the needs of multicultural communities.
> See political history in the making. Travel with other interested political junkies to a caucus location in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to see firsthand the process by which Republicans narrow the field of presidential candidates.

Details – OLLI GETS SECOND $1 MILLION GRANT

UNL’S OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE GETS SECOND $1 MILLION GRANT
Lincoln, Neb., Dec. 16, 2014 — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has earned a second $1 million grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation.
The award will be used to support the needs of OLLI’s growing membership, said Dee Aguilar, coordinator of the UNL OLLI program.
“Funds generated by investing this endowment will help provide stability and sustainability to further support and expand OLLI programs,” Aguilar said. “This is especially important as we work to keep up with the demands of our growing membership.”
Since 2004, OLLI at UNL has provided lifelong learning programming primarily for people 50 years and older. In the last year alone, OLLI has offered more than 150 non-credit courses plus special events and tours. Course topics range from writing, music, science and history to movies, theater and art.
OLLI programs are designed for learning strictly for the joy of learning; participants are not graded and do not earn college credits. The program is part of the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences and has more than 1,080 dues paying members participating in programs.
The institute received a first $1 million grant in 2008 after meeting several criteria set forth by the Bernard Osher Foundation.
Aguilar said OLLI was invited to apply for and earned a one-year, $50,000 operating grant from the national Osher foundation in 2013. Successful execution of the criteria set forth in that grant made the OLLI program eligible for consideration of the second $1 million endowment.

Requirements for second endowment gifts include:
diversity of programs offered;
opportunities for volunteer engagement and leadership;
strong support from the host institution;
sound organizational structure and financial stability;
annual fundraising program;
and membership of more than 1,000.
